Summary {#Sec1} ======= This chapter is a summary of infection control procedures to use in the dental office. The chapter starts with identifying the general hazardous materials in the dental office, followed by an extensive discussion on how to deal with the most common hazardous materials in the dental office, such as allergenic ingredients, including allergens and preservatives, and infectious agents. The chapter ends with infection control procedures when working with patients with contagious diseases. Introduction {#Sec2} ============ Infection control is an important aspect of the dental team's practice. Control of infections can prevent many infections in dental patients and staff and, therefore, is a cost-effective means of reducing both infectious disease risk and healthcare costs. Furthermore, practitioners should have the proper infection control guidelines and information to assess the control and management of infections in their dental practice. Infection control guidelines and information should be provided to all health care professionals, including dentists. It is the responsibility of dental schools to provide comprehensive information about infection control in the dental curriculum, which includes the fundamentals of infection control along with the standards and guidance of the American Dental Association (ADA) for infection control in the dental office. Infection control in the dental office should be practiced throughout the dental team and all individuals should have a basic understanding of infection control procedures. Although infection control guidelines are not one-size-fits-all, the standard methods of infection control in the dental office are mainly based on the body surfaces, environment, and sharps. In addition, the majority of infection control guidelines include the following:Hand hygiene, Universal Precautions, and Standard PrecautionsAdditional infection control precautions should be applied to provide protection from infectious diseases including hepatitis, HIV, and hepatitis B. Briefly, hand hygiene includes washing hands frequently with an antibacterial soap or a liquid hand soap or with water containing 0.1% to 0.5% (by volume) of triclosan. If water is not available for handwashing, gloves or disposable paper towels may be used to clean hands. However, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not recommended as they could interfere with the effectiveness of antiseptic activity, and their use does not always reduce
